Bittime - Popular crypto wallet, MetaMask, has just launched its Ethereum staking service. This service allows users to participate in Ethereum staking even if they do not have 32 ETH, the minimum amount required to run a validator independently.
MetaMask: Staking Ethereum
Currently, Ethereum uses a Proof of Stake (PoS) mechanism to secure the network. To become a validator in charge of processing transactions and securing the network, 32 ETH is required.
Unfortunately, with Ethereum's price currently hovering around $3,500, 32 ETH is equivalent to $112,000, making the 32 ETH holding requirement prohibitive for most investors.
Based on blockchain data, MetaMask revealed that 99% of ETH owners have holdings of less than 32 ETH. Seeing these conditions, MetaMask presents a staking service that allows users to participate even if their ETH holdings are below the minimum.

Staking Ethereum with MetaMask: Easy and Flexible
Through the MetaMask staking service, users can combine their ETH holdings with other users to reach the required minimum of 32 ETH. In this way, users can still get staking rewards to help secure the Ethereum network.
Additionally, the MetaMask service offers flexibility to its users. Staked assets can be withdrawn (unstake) at any time, depending on the exit queue protocol of the selected validator.
Collaboration with Consensys for Security
To ensure staking security, MetaMask collaborates with Consensys, a blockchain software development company. Consensys will run a validator whose job is to process transactions and secure the Ethereum network.
Consensys validator infrastructure is distributed across cloud providers, geographic regions, consensus clients, and execution clients. This further strengthens the security of the Ethereum network.

MetaMask Staking: Contribution to Decentralization
Matthieu Saint Olive, Senior Product Manager at Consensys, believes that the MetaMask staking service actually contributes to Ethereum's decentralization and security.
The more users who stake and the more ETH that is staked, the better it is for Ethereum's security.
He also added that the validator infrastructure underlying this staking service is geographically distributed and uses a variety of consensus clients as well as execution clients.

MetaMask Not Yet Available in the US and UK
Despite offering convenience for retail investors, MetaMask staking services are not currently available to users in the United States and United Kingdom. However, MetaMask is working to bring this service to both countries as soon as possible.
Regulation is the main reason why MetaMask staking services are not yet available in the US and UK. According to Saint Olive, regulations in the US regarding Ethereum staking are still developing. MetaMask plans to launch this service in the US as soon as regulations regarding staking become clearer.
Similarly to the UK, UK regulators are expected to issue additional regulatory guidance regarding staking. It is hoped that the UK will modernize existing regulations and provide greater clarity for the staking market.
