Bittime - Worldcoin, a crypto project that aims to create a digital identity system based on iris scanning, has officially stopped operations in Spain until the end of 2024. This postponement comes while the German audit agency completes an examination regarding Worldcoin's compliance with the European Union's data protection regulations (GDPR).
Delay on Worldcoin Demand
Interestingly, the suspension of operations in Spain was carried out at the request of Tools for Humanity, Worldcoin's main supporting organization. Tools for Humanity has voluntarily offered to extend the suspension of Worldcoin Orb operations in Spain.
AEPD said that Tools for Humanity has now made a legally binding commitment not to continue its activities in Spain until the end of the year or until the Data Protection Agency of Bavaria, Germany takes a final decision regarding the company's data processing.

Worldcoin Mission: Digital Identity
Worldcoin was initiated with the aim of creating a digital identity system that can prove human existence in cyberspace. Users who sign up to the project will receive WLD crypto tokens in exchange for scanning their iris using the Worldcoin Orb device. This scan aims to create a World ID, a digital identity that verifies the user's whereabouts in the real world.
Worldcoin: Differentiating Humans and Bots
Tools for Humanity, the organization behind Worldcoin, views the importance of digital identity to differentiate humans from artificial intelligence (AI) agents roaming the internet. In the future, it is predicted that the population of internet users will increasingly be filled with AI or bots, so digital identities that can prove human existence will become crucial.
However, the Worldcoin project has drawn scrutiny from various government agencies regarding personal data protection concerns. In March, the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) ordered Worldcoin to cease operations in Spain.

Support from Users in Spain
Despite the postponement of operations, Worldcoin still seems to have support from some users in Spain. According to a survey conducted by Worldcoin, more than 80% of 21,000 respondents believe that technology like World ID is important for differentiating between bots and humans online. Nearly 90% of respondents also support Worldcoin's return to Spain.
Tools for Humanity also expressed its delight at the results of the survey in Spain. However, they still voluntarily offered to extend the suspension of Orb operations in the country. We need to keep a close eye on Worldcoin's developments and whether they succeed in meeting the data protection standards set by GDPR.
