Bittime - Matter Labs, the developer of the Ethereum Layer 2-based ZkSync network, has just withdrawn its trademark application for the term "ZK". This decision was taken following strong criticism from researchers and pioneers of "ZK-proof" (zero-knowledge proof) technology.
According to Matter Labs, the debate surrounding the trademark application is stuck on one thing. "It is difficult to find a party that everyone considers neutral," the company wrote in its official announcement.

Initially, Matter Labs intended to patent the term "ZK". However, this move drew criticism from a number of important figures in the leading ZK project.

Those speaking out include Shafi Goldwasser and Silvio Micali, co-inventors of ZK-proof, Sandeep Nailwal and Brendan Farmer, founders of Polygon, and Eli Ben-Sasson, CEO of StarkWare.
Through a joint statement, they condemned Matter Labs' efforts. "ZK should be a public good. Instead, it should be accessible to everyone, not a company's trademark.

ZK Trademark Polemic Appears Before Matter Labs Airdrop
The controversy surrounding ZkSync's trademark application emerged at a time when the protocol was preparing to conduct an airdrop (distribution of free tokens). This is expected to happen in mid-June.
Additionally, Matter Labs' intention to use the ticker "ZK" also sparked a dispute with Polyhedra, which chose the ticker "ZKJ" for their own token.
ZkSync itself is one of the most popular Ethereum Layer 2 blockchains built with ZK-proof technology. This approach differs from the optimistic rollup strategy used by networks such as Optimism, Arbitrum, and Blast.
According to The Block data , ZkSync frequently records the highest seven-day transaction moving average among all ZK-based Ethereum Layer 2 networks.
Their competitor, Linea, recently suspended its network following an exploit experienced by Velocore, a decentralized exchange built on Linea and several other blockchains.

The cancellation of the "ZK" trademark application by Matter Labs is an example of the importance of collaboration and openness in the crypto world.
The progress of blockchain technology cannot be separated from the contributions of many parties, and exclusive ownership of crucial technical terms such as "ZK" can actually hinder innovation.
