Bittime – The Bitcoin blockchain's reputation as a network that primarily supports " digital gold " may be about to change. Currently, there are efforts to add new features through software updates to the Bitcoin code.
OP_CAT: Program Baru Bitcoin?
The leading program in this renewal debate is OP_CAT. This is a small software tweak that will add about 10 lines of code to allow users to link two elements together.
If adopted, OP_CAT will open the door to various improvements for Bitcoin users. Some potential benefits include better coin storage and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, which are already common on other blockchains such as Ethereum and Solana.
“We can create smart contracts that are very similar to what you see on other blockchains,” said Udi Wertheimer, CEO of Taproot Wizards, a backer of OP_CAT. "Bitcoin can be much more than what it is now. It's time to discuss technical improvements."

Bitcoin Network Updates to Implement OP_CAT
However, implementing OP_CAT means having to update the Bitcoin network. This requires approval from the Bitcoin community and core developers. In contrast to Bitcoin, competitors like Ethereum often make major upgrades at least once a year.
So far, the largest cryptocurrency network in the world has deliberately not been changed. The fewer changes, the more stable and secure the network is considered. However, some parties believe OP_CAT could be the first step to challenge this assumption. Several important figures in the crypto world are starting to support this idea.
The OP_CAT feature, introduced in October by Ethan Heilman and Armin Sabouri, was recently launched on a test Bitcoin network called Signet and is numbered BIP-420. This indicates that OP_CAT is being seriously considered for implementation.
OP_CAT Whitepaper Has Been Released Since April
Some well-known figures in the crypto world, including Solana Labs co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, even added “BIP-420” to their names on social media X. Taproot Wizards in February launched the Quantum Cats Ordinals collection to promote OP_CAT.
In April, they published a white paper outlining a framework for building applications using OP_CAT.
"If this innovation is accepted, it opens up the potential for all use cases on every blockchain to go back to Bitcoin," said Henry Elder, chief executive officer at UTXO Management, an investor in Taproot Wizards.

OP_CAT Prohibits 2x Use of Same Coin
For example, OP_CAT could allow the creation of “non-equivocation contracts”, Bitcoin contracts that would penalize someone if they tried to use the same coin twice.
Additionally, OP_CAT could potentially give wallet owners time to cancel transactions if their wallets are hacked.
"This is a good idea because Bitcoin storage would benefit from a little extra programmability," said Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, a company focused on Bitcoin technology. "This additional programmability also enables better Layer 2 capabilities."
These capabilities, for example, can create better bridges with second-layer blockchains, making transactions safer and easier to carry out.
Better Security
For Heilman, the creator of OP_CAT, this feature could help Bitcoin users better secure their "digital gold", through the creation of "vaults" for safer storage.
However, when and whether the update will be implemented remains unclear. Especially considering that there are skeptics such as loyal Bitcoin supporters, including Michael Saylor from MicroStrategy, who believe that Bitcoin is already the best cryptocurrency without needing to change.
Bitcoin Won't Update?
Jeff Garzik, a former Bitcoin core developer, is pessimistic that Bitcoin will receive even a minor update like OP_CAT.
"This is why some people describe Bitcoin as something rigid: strong and secure but rarely changed or upgraded," said Garzik, who co-founded crypto infrastructure and application company Bloq.
Heilman, the developer behind the OP_CAT update, acknowledged there is no clear timeline. "It could be that the community reaches a consensus in the next four months, or it could take years."
Hot Debate: Security vs New Features of Bitcoin
Proponents of the update, such as Blockstream's Adam Back, argue that the additional programmability OP_CAT brings will not reduce Bitcoin's security. On the contrary, this can increase the security of Bitcoin storage through the creation of a "vault".
Additionally, this additional programmability could pave the way for better integration with second-layer blockchain solutions, potentially making Bitcoin transactions faster, cheaper, and scalable.
However, opponents of the update, such as Jeff Garzik, worry that changes to Bitcoin's code, no matter how small, could risk compromising the stability and security of the network. They argue that Bitcoin's track record as a secure and test-resistant network is a major advantage.

Worried About Bitcoin Losing Appeal with New Features
They worry that pursuing new features that other blockchains have could make Bitcoin lose its appeal as "digital gold".
The decision to adopt OP_CAT is ultimately in the hands of the Bitcoin community. This decision-making process usually takes a long time and involves intense discussion and debate.
OP_CAT proponents must be able to provide strong evidence that the benefits offered outweigh the potential risks. It will be interesting to see how this debate continues and whether Bitcoin will eventually receive its first update in years.
