Judge Finds Wright Guilty of Forgery and Perjury
In a written decision published on Monday, Judge James Mellor declared that Wright committed perjury during the six-week COPA v Wright trial. In this trial, Wright stated that he was the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. However, Mellor concluded that Wright used forged documents to support his false claims.
“It is clear that Dr. Wright engaged in the intentional creation of false documents to support false claims and used the Court as a vehicle for fraud,” Mellor wrote. “I am completely satisfied that Dr. Wright lied to the Court extensively and repeatedly. All his lies and fake documents support his biggest lie: his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto.”

Legal Battle with COPA
For years, Craig Wright has boldly claimed that he was the mastermind behind Bitcoin. These claims have always been met with skepticism and controversy, ultimately leading to legal disputes with the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a key player in the crypto industry. COPA filed suit against Wright in 2021, with the trial beginning on February 5. COPA accused Wright of forgery and, later, perjury.

Judge Mellor's Recognition of Satoshi Nakamoto's Identity
In March, Mellor concluded that Wright was not Nakamoto and did not write Bitcoin's foundational document, the “white paper.” Mellor explained, “Dr Wright presented himself as a very intelligent man. However, in my judgment, he is not as intelligent as he thinks.”

The decision has significant implications for the cryptocurrency industry. This affirms Bitcoin's decentralized, leaderless essence and ensures that no single individual can claim its origins. This court ruling finally resolves one of the most controversial and widely publicized claims regarding Satoshi Nakamoto's pseudonym.
Implications of the Court's Decision and Wright's Response
This decision also had legal consequences for Wright. His $7.6 million in assets were frozen in March to prevent Wright from moving his assets overseas to avoid the costs of the case. Feeling the loss, Wright tried to settle the dispute with COPA out of court in January, but COPA refused.
Wright has not publicly responded to Mellor's statement but posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “I fully intend to appeal the court's decision on the identity issue.”
