Bittime -Popular trading platform Robinhood (HOOD) posted impressive financial results for the first quarter of 2024, with a significant surge in crypto trading volume and related revenue.
Robinhood Crypto Trading Volume Soars
Robinhood's nominal crypto trading volume reached $36 billion in the first quarter of 2024, an increase of 224% compared to the same period a year earlier.
This figure was the main catalyst in increasing crypto-related revenue by 232% to $126 million. This increase also contributed to a surge in overall transaction revenue, which increased 59% year-over-year to $329 million.
The increase in crypto asset trading volume cannot be separated from increasing investor interest in these digital assets. This is in line with trends observed at other crypto companies such as Coinbase (COIN), which also reported “spectacular” first-quarter results thanks to improving crypto market conditions.

Robinhood's Significant Crypto Asset Growth
Apart from trading volume, crypto assets held by Robinhood users also experienced significant growth. Crypto assets held reached $26.2 billion as of March 31, an increase of 78% from the end of 2023.
Robinhood not only posted growth in trading volume and crypto revenue, but also managed to exceed sales and profit expectations for the first quarter of this year.
The company reported revenue of $618 million during the quarter, topping analysts' estimates of $552.7 million. Earnings per share for the quarter came in at $0.18, beating analysts' average expectations of $0.06.
Behind Robinhood's Growth, There is a Notification from the SEC
Despite Robinhood posting positive results, the company received a notice from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding its crypto unit. This notice raises concerns about the potential for stricter regulations in the future.
Robinhood CFO Jason Warnick expressed disappointment with the notification, but emphasized that it had no impact on customer accounts and that the company's crypto division's operational business continues as usual.
Warnick also stressed that Robinhood has taken a conservative approach in terms of the points it lists and the services it offers, and that the company adheres to the same legal and compliance standards as other brokerage businesses.
