Bittime - The crypto industry has been shocked again by a massive theft case. This time, hackers managed to make off with 1,155 WBTC, almost the equivalent of $70 million! According to analysis by Slow Mist's blockchain security team, the IP associated with the criminal likely originates from Hong Kong.
Phishing Attacks with Similar Address Techniques
Previously, Slow Mist revealed that victims experienced phishing attacks. This attack succeeded in deceiving users by using a digital wallet address that had the same first and last numbers as the official wallet address.
This technique is relatively simple, but it often succeeds in tricking users who are less alert. Victims who are not observant may immediately make transactions to that address without realizing that they are actually transacting with hackers.

After launching a phishing attack and successfully stealing 1,155 WBTC, the criminal immediately moved quickly. They exchanged all the stolen WBTC for 22,960 ETH (Ethereum).
It didn't stop there, the perpetrator then used a large number of digital wallets to send and distribute the stolen funds. This step is thought to be an attempt to eliminate traces and complicate the tracking process.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Until now, the relevant authorities may still be carrying out investigations to reveal the identity and whereabouts of the 1,155 WBTC hacker.
Meanwhile, Slow Mist continues to monitor the movement of the stolen funds and strives to help victims recover their assets.
