Crypto Used in Drug Transactions, Result of Police Investigation that Busted Synthetic Marijuana Syndicate

It turns out that the convenience offered by the crypto world is being misused by a group of individuals who commit cross-border criminal acts.

Police Arrest Synthetic Marijuana Syndicate

Police dismantled a synthetic marijuana laboratory in a luxury residential complex in Sentul, Bogor Regency. Five people were arrested in connection with the hidden laboratory operation.

Please note, MDMB-4en-PINACA is an artificial chemical compound which is a synthetic cannabinoid derivative or what is known as synthetic marijuana.

MDMB-4en-PINACA is included in the Class I narcotics category based on Minister of Health Regulation Number 30 of 2023.

The five suspects named are as follows:

1. BBH, a 28 year old man, was responsible as a warehouse guard and transporter, and took the goods according to suspect MFH's instructions to be handed over to the reseller.
2. H, 36 year old man, works as a cook or preparer; it works to process 5CL (Synthetic Cannabinoid) into MDMB-4EN-PINACA.
3. S, 31 year old man, also serves as a cook; he processed 5CL (Synthetic Cannabinoid) into MDMB-4EN-PINACA.
4. GBH, 20 year old man, serves as a courier for buyers or resellers; he took the gel containing MDMB-4EN-PINACA from suspect BBH to take to West Java.
5. MFH, 24 year old man, acts as financier and controller; he is the person who funded and guided suspects H and S in the process of processing 5CL (Synthetic Cannabinoid) into MDMB-4EN-PINACA.

Brigadier General Suyudi Ario Seto, Deputy Chief of Police for Metro Jaya, stated that during the disclosure of this case, his party succeeded in confiscating a number of pinacas which, if converted into synthetic tobacco, would produce around 35 kilograms of synthetic tobacco.

"In accordance with these results, we estimate that this disclosure will save around 105,000 lives," said Suyudi at Polda Metro Jaya Headquarters, Jakarta, on Thursday (2/5).

The lab produces pinaca as the main raw material for making synthetic marijuana. 

Pinaca production in the laboratory has been going on for 6 months and is operated by someone using a mobile phone.

Brigadier General Suyudi revealed that this network purchased ingredients for making pinacas from China, using crypto as a transaction tool.

"Information from the public states that there is a pinaca type drug syndicate that will be sent via package to Indonesia. The basic ingredients are purchased from China," said Suyudi.

He explained that transactions were carried out using crypto. F acts as a financier and controller of a home industry laboratory for the production of synthetic drugs.

"Payment transactions are carried out in crypto. F acts as the main financier and intellectual in this group, he finances, buys equipment and organizes the manufacture of this type of synthetic pinaca drug," he said.

Not a New Practice

The involvement of crypto assets in illicit goods transaction networks is nothing new. Previously, blockchain analytics company Chainalysis had reported that there was a flow of crypto funds worth US$250 million flowing into chemical stores in China.

This finding is the result of accumulated transactions that occurred from July 2015 to February 2024. 

The chemical shop in question is not an ordinary shop, but a distributor of precursor substances, namely basic materials that are often used in the manufacture of narcotics and psychotropic substances.
