Bittime - The Hong Kong cryptocurrency market is showing mixed trends regarding spot asset-based Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) product. For the first time since it officially traded on April 30, the Hong Kong Bitcoin Spot ETF experienced a redemption.
Net Redemption ETF Bitcoin Spot
According to SoSo Value data, on May 6, 2024, the Bitcoin Spot ETF net redemption was recorded at 75.36 Bitcoin. This amount is equivalent to 4,150 individual Bitcoin holdings by investors. This caused daily transaction volume to reach US$8.6 million and total ETF net assets to US$266 million.

Redemption and Subscription Mechanism
It should be noted that crypto ETFs in Hong Kong use a spot asset-based redemption and subscription mechanism.
The term "net redemption" means that the difference between the number of assets purchased (subscription) and the number of assets sold (redemption) in a certain period is positive.
This means that there are more investors selling their Bitcoin holdings through ETFs than buying them.
Ethereum Spot ETF Subscriptions Actually Increase
In contrast to the Bitcoin Spot ETF, the Ethereum Spot ETF in Hong Kong shows a positive trend. For 4 consecutive trading days, there was a net subscription of Ethereum. Yesterday, Ethereum net subscription reached 999.75 units.
Thus, the total Ethereum holdings in the ETF are 17,280 units. The daily transaction value reached US$1.8 million and the total ETF net assets were US$54.87 million.

Reasons for Declining Interest in Bitcoin ETFs
Some potential factors that could cause a decline in investor interest in Bitcoin ETFs include:
- Bitcoin Price Correction: Bitcoin price has experienced a correction in the last few days. This may make some investors choose to sell their Bitcoin holdings via ETFs.
- Lack of Investor Experience: Crypto ETFs are a relatively new financial product. New investors may not fully understand how this product works and the risks associated with it.
The divergent performance between Bitcoin ETFs and Ethereum ETFs in Hong Kong suggests that investors are taking a cautious and selective approach. Nonetheless, it is still too early to conclude the long-term trend of this crypto ETF product.
