Bittime - Bitcoin network just made history by surpassing 1 billion transactions! According to data from Clark Moody displayed on Cointelegraph, this 1 billion transaction was successfully recorded on block 842,241, on May 5 2024 at 04:34:43 WIB.
Pivotal Moment for Bitcoin
This achievement marks Bitcoin's journey which has passed 15 years, 4 months and 4 days since the first block was mined by Bitcoin's founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, on January 3, 2009.
This means that during those 5,603 days, an average of 178,475 transactions occurred per day on the Bitcoin network. However, it should be noted that this figure does not include transactions made on the Lightning Network.
The achievement of 1 billion transactions is also an important moment for the Bitcoin network. This transaction illustrates Bitcoin's continued growth and adoption over the years.
Even though there are other competitors in the cryptocurrency industry, Bitcoin still holds an important role as the pioneer and most popular digital asset.

Lightning Network as an Alternative
The transaction amounts mentioned above do not include transactions occurring on the Lightning Network. Lightning Network is Layer 2 Bitcoin that focuses on micropayments.
Data from crypto exchange River shows that the Lightning Network processed at least 6.6 million transactions in August 2023 alone. This figure indicates that hundreds of millions of transactions may have occurred on the Lightning Network since its launch in January 2018.
Transaction Surge During Bitcoin Halving
Daily transactions on the Bitcoin network spiked during the fourth Bitcoin halving which occurred on April 20 2024. In fact, a record high of 926,000 transactions was recorded on April 23.
This surge was largely due to the launch of the Runes protocol, a new Bitcoin token standard, at block 840,000.
However, Bitcoin's daily transaction activity has now returned to the normal range, namely around 660,260 transactions as of May 4, 2024.
Bitcoin vs Ethereum
Although Bitcoin is the oldest crypto network, it is worth noting that it is not the first to reach 1 billion transactions. Based on data from Etherscan, Bitcoin's main competitor, Ethereum, has processed more than 2 billion transactions since its launch in July 2015. Meanwhile, Ethereum has an advantage in terms of higher transaction capacity compared to Bitcoin.
