With NymVPN alpha, users can help Nym test its functions when used to access the internet and other applications. This alpha version aims to identify and fix deficiencies before being officially launched.

What is NymVPN Alpha?

NymVPN alpha is an application that utilizes Nym Mixnet to protect internet users' privacy. Nym Mixnet functions by encrypting all your internet activity through two options, namely Mixnet 5-hop and 2-hop decentralized VPN (with additional features).

NymVPN Default Settings

By default, NymVPN is set to operate in 5-hop (mixnet) mode. Let's look at the illustration:

Users can switch to 2-hop only mode, which offers faster speeds but with reduced privacy. In this mode, your data will only be sent between the two Gateways and not through the Mix Node. 

This mode uses Mixnet Sphinx packets with shorter fixed routes, improving speed, but does not provide as strong protection as 5-hop mode.

Key Features of NymVPN Alpha

Alpha users can experience the core features of NymVPN. The following are the features that can be used:

• 2-hop dVPN: suitable for private browsing. Going forward, this mode will use WireGuard for best speed.

• Noise-generating mixnet mode (with 5 hops): offers advanced privacy for messaging and crypto transactions.

Access NymVPN Alpha

NymVPN alpha access is currently limited to selected users from the waiting list and members of the Nym core community. New users who register on the waiting list will be contacted weekly via email to join the alpha. 

They will receive access to a unique nymvpn.com page to create access credentials using zk-nyms technology.

For those who haven't been contacted, don't worry! Nym will invite more users as testing progresses. You can still register on the waiting list for the opportunity to become an alpha tester at a later stage.

Free or Paid?

Alpha testing is free, but does not guarantee forever free use. Later, NymVPN users can subscribe using Bitcoin, NYM, or even a credit card.

NymVPN's full launch is targeted for late summer to fall 2024. NymVPN will be a paid version with a powerful set of additional features:

• Security features such as a killswitch to prevent data leaks.
• A more robust and tested mainnet network.
• Various payment options, including debit cards and crypto (including NYM).
• Users' payments cannot be tied to their online activities thanks to zk-nyms.
• Split tunneling configuration
