Bittime - The crypto market is in turmoil again! According to the latest data from Coinglass, there has been a significant wave of crypto contract liquidations in the last hour. Let's take a deeper look at this situation.
What is Liquidation?
Liquidation in the crypto world, especially trading crypto contracts (futures), means being forced to close trading positions automatically by the trading platform because the margin balance is insufficient.

Nearly $70 Million Liquidated in 1 Hour
Coinglass data shows that the total value of contracts liquidated across the network in the last hour reached US$69.4839 million, around IDR 998.8 billion.
The details of the liquidation are as follows:
- Dominant Long Liquidations: Most of the liquidations, namely US$68.0078 million, around IDR 980.2 billion, hit long (buy) positions. This indicates that many investors who bet on rising prices experienced losses because crypto prices actually fell.
- Little Short Liquidation: On the other hand, the liquidation value for short (selling) positions only reached US$1.4761 million, around IDR 21.2 billion).
Bitcoin and Ethereum Hit the Biggest Impact
This liquidation also had an impact on the main crypto assets. Here are the details:
- Bitcoin (BTC) Liquidation: The total liquidation value of BTC contracts reached US$29.1281 million, around IDR 418.4 billion.
- Ethereum (ETH) Liquidation: The total liquidation value of ETH contracts reached US$13.5514 million, around IDR 195.4 billion.

Potential Causes of Large Liquidations
Several factors that may be the cause of this surge in liquidations include:
- Decline in Crypto Prices: The recent decline in crypto prices, especially Bitcoin which touched the US$58,000 level, could be the main trigger for the liquidation of long positions. Investors who used leverage to increase potential profits were forced to liquidate because prices moved inversely to their expectations.
- Market Volatility: The crypto market is known for its high volatility. Rapid price changes can make leveraged positions vulnerable to liquidation.
- Negative Sentiment: Negative sentiment circulating on social media or crypto news can trigger panic and encourage investors to close their positions, thereby aggravating liquidations.
