Bittime - Liquid restaking protocol Renzo has launched its REZ token , which debuted with a market capitalization of 289 million United States (US) dollars.
This token recorded a trading volume of 75 million US dollars in just one hour after distribution.

As expected, liquid restaking protocol Renzo opened airdrop claims for its native token, REZ, which debuted with a market capitalization of US$289 million according to CoinMarketCap.
The initial circulation of REZ tokens is 1.15 billion units, while the remaining 8.85 billion are locked until certain criteria are met.
Token distribution is allocated 31% to investors, 32% to the community, and 20% to key contributors, who must adhere to a one-year lock-in and two-year vesting period.

Renzo acts as a bridge to EigenLayer, securing actively validated services (AVS).
Betting and Rewards
Users who stake Ether (ETH) on the platform will earn rewards and automatically receive ezETH, Renzo's liquid restaking token.
ezETH can be used to generate higher yields on various decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

Users who accumulate more than 500,000 ezPoints, earned by staking on Renzo following the protocol's launch in January, will be subject to a 50% lockup during the three-month maturity period.
Via a tweet on Twitter, Renzo stated that the REZ token is not yet available for trading on any decentralized exchange.
However, according to data from Dextools, the official token contract published on the Renzo website has recorded a trading volume of 75 million US dollars, one hour after opening the claim.

The ezETH Crash and Its Impact on Renzo
Liquid staking protocol Renzo experienced impressive growth in 2024, reaching a peak deposit of over 1 million Ether, worth approximately 3.3 billion US dollars.
This growth was driven in large part by a points program that encouraged users to deposit ETH directly into Renzo and participate in more speculative opportunities.
Partnerships with other DeFi protocols, such as Morpho and Gearbox, have encouraged holders of Renzo's liquid staking token, ezETH, to use leverage strategies to increase their points.
This strategy involves using ezETH to borrow ETH, which is then reinvested into ezETH to increase yields.

But recently, the perception of an error in the allocation of the upcoming airdrop led to a sudden wave of ezETH selling. This broke the correlation with ETH and caused mass liquidations.
This situation causes significant losses for some users. Gearbox co-founder Ivan GBI confirmed that anyone with leverage greater than 6x was liquidated.
Main Problem
The main problem is the lack of liquidity, as ezETH is backed by ETH placed in staking. However, the redemption and return process takes time, and Renzo has not yet enabled withdrawals.
The quickest option to access the underlying ETH is simply through on-chain liquidity pools, which can become volatile with some significant movements.
Mike Silagadze, co-founder of EtherFi, explains that even just one in a thousand users deciding to redeem ETH can destabilize the pool. This triggered panic and broke the correlation between ezETH and ETH.
This event highlights the risks associated with liquid staking protocols and the need for more solid and resilient liquidity structures.
