US Judge Rejects Heavy Sentence for CZ, Binance Co-Founder Sentenced to 4 Months in Prison

Bittime – In a major development for the cryptocurrency industry, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, was sentenced to four months in prison on May 1. This news follows CZ's guilty plea to charges of facilitating money laundering on his crypto exchange, Binance.

Judge Denies Justice Department Request

According to a live report by a Coindesk reporter, Judge Richard Jones, who presided over the trial, disagreed with the Department of Justice's (DOJ) request for a stiffer sentence of 3 years. Judge Jones cited a lack of evidence showing CZ's awareness of the illegal activity.

Potential Sentence Range Emerges

Initial reports indicate a potential sentence of 10-16 months in prison, with 1-3 years of supervised release. This range is in line with recommendations from the probation office, which reportedly assigned a violation severity level of 12 to this case. 

Judge Jones ultimately rejected the DOJ's proposed 36-month sentence. Instead, he sentenced CZ to a much shorter sentence of 4 months in prison.
