Bittime – Centrifuge, a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform, has just announced its plans to build a real-world asset (RWA) lending protocol aimed at institutions.
The protocol will operate on Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by crypto exchange Coinbase.
Centrifuge Protocol for RWA Verifier
Through a blog post published last Wednesday, Centrifuge explained that the protocol will allow verified institutions to enter their RWAs into the blockchain and obtain loans based on ownership of those assets.
“We continue to see significant interest from our institutional clients for easier access to on-chain tokenization solutions,” said Anthony Bassili, head of allocation and tokenization at Coinbase.
The announcement of these plans coincided with Centrifuge raising $15 million in an “overfunded” Series A funding round.
This funding round was led by ParaFi Capital and Greenfield, with participation from other companies such as Arrington Capital, Circle Ventures, Gnosis, The Spartan Group, and Wintermute Ventures.
The price of Centrifuge's native token, CFG, surged by 14% following the announcement, before stabilizing. According to CoinGecko data, despite the slight decline, CFG price still rose 5% in the last 24 hours, surpassing the 1% decline of the CoinDesk DeFi Index during the same period.

Increasing RWA Tokenization Competition
Centrifuge's move comes amidst intense competition in the field of real-world asset tokenization.
Digital asset companies and global banks are working to move traditional financial products such as bonds and credit to blockchain infrastructure to increase efficiency, settlement speed, and transparency.
Asset management firm 21. co projects the market for tokenized assets to reach $10 trillion by the end of the decade.
Centrifuge specializes in bringing structured credit products to the blockchain. Data from RWA.xyz shows that there are currently $270 million in active loans on the Centrifuge protocol.
Ben Forman of ParaFi Capital expressed confidence in the institutional adoption of this technology.
“The Centrifuge team is a leader in real-world asset tokenization, with a very thoughtful approach to design decisions around legal, regulatory, and smart contract architecture,” said Forman.
The Future of Real World Asset Lending in DeFi
Centrifuge's plan to build an RWA lending protocol on Coinbase's Base marks an exciting development in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.
Let's take a deeper look at the potential and challenges faced by this technology.
The Potential of Real-World Asset Lending in DeFi
1. Efficiency and Transparency
Blockchain offers a more efficient and transparent infrastructure compared to traditional financial systems. RWA lending in DeFi can cut administrative costs and increase transaction speed.
2. Greater Accessibility
DeFi has the potential to open access to loans for institutions that previously had difficulty obtaining funding from the traditional financial system.
3. Investment diversification
Tokenization of real-world assets allows investors to invest in assets that were previously difficult to access, such as small and medium business credit or real estate.
Real World Asset Lending Challenges in DeFi
1. Regulation
Crypto asset regulations are still evolving, and there is no clear regulatory framework related to RWA lending in DeFi. This can create uncertainty for institutions and industry players.
2. Institutional Adoption
Further efforts are needed to increase institutional awareness and trust in DeFi technology and RWA lending.
3. Liquidity
The market for tokens representing real-world assets may be less liquid than for other crypto assets. This can make it difficult for investors to buy or sell those tokens quickly.

Conclusion
Real-world asset lending in DeFi has the potential to increase efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in the financial sector.
However, regulatory, institutional adoption and liquidity challenges need to be overcome for this technology to achieve wider adoption.
Going forward, collaboration between DeFi industry players, regulators, and financial institutions will be key to realizing the full potential of RWA lending.
