Bittime - The cryptocurrency world is once again filled with controversy. The Worldcoin (WLD) project , an ambitious project founded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is now facing accusations of violating consumer law in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The provincial government of Buenos Aires officially accused Worldcoin of using “abusive clauses” in their user agreement. This clause is considered unfair and detrimental to consumers.
Worldcoin (WLD): Allegations of Consumer Law Violation
According to the notice, Worldcoin (WLD)'s unfair agreement allegedly allowed them to terminate services without offering repairs or replacements.
Additionally, the government accused Worldcoin of requiring users to give up their right to collective complaints and instead applying Cayman Islands law to Argentine residents .
Furthermore, any disputes that arise are required to be resolved through arbitration in California. The application of foreign regulations by Worldcoin (WLD) allegedly violates the Argentine Civil and Commercial Code.
Access by Worldcoin (WLD) Underage and Data Deletion
The provincial government presented the results of an audit carried out on Worldcoin and submitted two complaints. First, the company does not have an age disclaimer informing users that people under 18 cannot access the service.
Second, Worldcoin (WLD) stores the personal data of Argentine users internationally in Brazil. The Buenos Aires government attributed the issue to conflicting information about the "use, protection and storage" of biometric data collected from the faces and eyes of Argentine users.
Finally, data deletion is a problem in itself. Undersecretary of Commercial Development and Investment Promotion Buenos Aires, Ariel Aguilar questioned whether Worldcoin (WLD) could delete biometric data permanently.
Fines and Sanctions
If the allegations are proven, Worldcoin faces a fine of up to 1 billion Argentine pesos (around Rp. 1.2 billion). The Buenos Aires government said the company currently faces only those potential fines.
Global Context: Controversies in Various Countries
The allegations in Argentina are not the only ones Worldcoin is facing. Previously, this company had also faced similar violations in other countries, such as Spain and Portugal. In both countries, Worldcoin (WLD) was banned from collecting data for three months due to data privacy and regulatory violations.
