Bittime - Good news for Arbitrum users and developers! Offchain Labs has just announced the launch of a decentralized dispute resolution solution called BOLD on the Arbitrum testnet.
BOLD: New Verification Protocol for Arbitrum
BOLD is a new verification protocol for handling disputes in the Optimistic Rollup environment. This protocol was initially proposed by the Arbitrum team in August 2023.
The main goal of BOLD is to enable permissionless verification on Arbitrum to eliminate the risk of latency attacks that may occur during the dispute resolution process.

BOLD advantages
BOLD offers several advantages compared to previous systems, including:
- Permissionless Validation: With BOLD, anyone can run a validator node and contribute to the consensus process, thereby securing the network and validating withdrawals back to Ethereum.
- Better Security: BOLD leverages the Offchain Labs team's long experience in designing interactive proof protocols to create a new system for Arbitrum that is resistant to delay attacks. This system allows one honest party with good resources to defeat many bad parties without needing to engage in head-to-head play.
- Funding Challenges Raised: Filing a rebuttal requires significant funding. However, anyone can create trustless smart contracts to pool funds and defend Arbitrum against invalid claims, or challenge invalid claims submitted by others.
- Greater Decentralization: By allowing permissionless validation, BOLD has the potential to increase the decentralization of the Arbitrum network and make it more resilient.
Towards Stage Two Rollup
The launch of BOLD on the testnet is an important step for Arbitrum to achieve status as a Stage Two rollup. Phase Two Rollup offers better security and decentralization compared to Phase One. With BOLD, validation on Arbitrum no longer relies on a list of permitted validators, but can be done by anyone.
