Bittime – Wormhole (WORM) cross-chain protocol was caught making a mistake in their token airdrop program.
Instead of excluding the hacker responsible for the exploitation incident in February 2022, Wormhole instead allocated tokens to wallets associated with the hacker.
The Beginning of Mistakes Revealed
This error was first uncovered by an anonymous crypto user named Pland on the X platform. Pland discovered that four wallet addresses associated with the hacker were listed as airdrop recipients in an eligibility check on the Wormhole website.
Based on estimates, the four wallets were allocated more than 31,600 WORM tokens, with a total value of around $38,000.
Fortunately, the token allocation to those wallets was canceled after Wormhole realized its error, according to sources familiar with the situation.
For information, the Wormhole hack in February 2022 was one of the largest incidents in the history of decentralized finance (DeFi). Hackers managed to steal 120,000 ETH, which was then worth about $323 million.
Despite experiencing this embarrassing incident, the Wormhole airdrop program was successful in attracting the attention of the crypto community. According to data from CoinGecko, since the airdrop program began, the total trading volume of WORM tokens has reached $1.25 billion.
The price of the WORM token itself rose to $1.66 but then experienced fluctuations throughout the day. At the time this article was written, the price of WORM was around $1.21.
This incident is a reminder of the importance of security in the world of DeFi. Protocols need to have strict security measures in place to prevent exploits and ensure proper token allocation.

Analysis and Impact of Airdrop Wormhole Allocation Mistakes
Wormhole's misallocation of airdrops to hackers raises several important points to analyze:
1. Wormhole's reputation is tarnished
This incident could damage users' trust in Wormhole. The failure to exclude hackers from the airdrop program shows a lack of attention to detail and potentially raises questions about the competence of the Wormhole development team.
2. Security and Auditing Questionable
The misallocation to hackers raises questions about the effectiveness of Wormhole's security measures. How could hackers escape the airdrop eligibility checking process?
This prompted a thorough security audit to identify and close potential security gaps.
3. Impact on WORM Prices
Although the price of WORM briefly rose after the airdrop announcement, this misallocation could hurt the long-term price. Eroded user trust can lead to sell-offs and a decline in token prices.
4. Opportunities for Competitors
Wormhole errors can be exploited by competing cross-chain protocols. They can use this moment to attract users by emphasizing their advantages in terms of security and transparency.
5. The Importance of Transparency
Wormhole needs to be transparent in handling these errors. They must immediately explain to the public and detail the corrective steps they will take to prevent a similar incident from recurring.
Conclusion
The misallocation of the Wormhole airdrop was an embarrassing and potentially detrimental incident for the protocol. Wormhole needs to take comprehensive remedial steps to restore user trust and ensure the security of its platform.
For crypto users, this incident is an important reminder to always do research before interacting with any DeFi protocol.
