Bittime - Good news for the Bitcoin (BTC) mining industry ! Hut 8 CEO, Asher Genoot, is optimistic that Bitcoin mining company bankruptcies will be much less common in the coming years compared to 2022.
Causes of Bankruptcy in 2022
According to Genoot, the main causes of bankruptcy of Bitcoin mining companies in 2022 are excessive use of leverage and lack of preparation in the face of rising energy costs.
Some of the Bitcoin mining companies that filed for crypto bankruptcy in 2022 were Compute North, Celsius Mining, and Core Scientific (which is now back on the Nasdaq).

There is Positive Change
However, Genoot sees positive changes in the Bitcoin mining industry. Miners now tend to use less leverage and rely more on debt-free capital from equity markets to grow their businesses.
Genoot predicts increased merger and acquisition (M&A) activity among small-scale Bitcoin mining companies. This is believed to help reduce the bankruptcy rate significantly.

Bitcoin Prices and M&A
Genoot explained that Bitcoin prices may need to fall back to the $30,000 to $40,000 range for M&A activity or distress opportunities (opportunities that arise due to financial pressure) to occur significantly.

Impact of Bitcoin Halving
The Bitcoin halving event is expected to occur on April 20, when block 840,000 is mined. The halving will reduce the rewards miners receive from 6.25 BTC to 3,125 BTC (at the current price of $412,000 to $211,000).
Genoot estimates that investors will be more interested in large-scale operators that have the lowest marginal production costs after the halving event.

Future Bitcoin Price Predictions
Historically, Bitcoin prices usually reach new highs around 6-12 months after a halving event. This happened in the three previous halving periods, namely in 2012, 2016 and 2020.
However, the trend seems different this time around. Bitcoin prices have actually exceeded the previous record high ($68,990) on March 5, or about 46 days before the halving.
Some industry experts believe that the launch of a Bitcoin futures (spot) exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States was the main factor driving the unusual rise in Bitcoin prices in recent months.
