Vitalik Buterin: The Important Role of Ethereum in the Farcaster Network

Bittime - Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently responded to a comment by user X who argued that Farcaster does not use blockchain technology to store messages, so it is not a true blockchain use case.

In his response, Buterin explained that although Farcaster messages are not directly stored on the blockchain, Ethereum (via Optimism, a Layer 2 solution) plays a crucial role in the Farcaster network.

Ethereum's Role in Farcaster

• Maintains a List of Accounts Allowed to Send Messages: Ethereum maintains a registry of accounts permitted to send messages on Farcaster. This information is then stored by the CRDT (Conflict-Free Replicated Data Type) node.
• Prevents Spam: The existence of an account registry on the blockchain prevents spam because not just anyone can use Farcaster for unrelated things, such as storing encrypted hard drives or movies.
• Preventing Sybil Attacks: By storing the registry on the blockchain, Farcaster avoids Sybil attacks, namely someone who uses multiple fake identities to manipulate the network.

Why is Registry in Blockchain Important?

Buterin stressed the importance of storing account registries on the blockchain for two reasons:

1. Decentralization: The registry stored on the blockchain cannot be controlled by a centralized party, so it is in line with the principle of decentralization which is at the core of blockchain technology.
2. Security: Blockchain offers resistance to Sybil attacks, thereby maintaining the integrity and security of the Farcaster network.

CRDT and Optimism

Buterin also clarified the misconception that Farcaster stores messages on large chains like Filecoin. In contrast, Farcaster uses CRDTs to store messages, aiming to achieve consistency across a collection of messages over a period of time. Meanwhile, Ethereum (via Optimism) acts as a platform for storing account registries.
