Digital Money: A Potential Solution for Remote Countries in the Pacific Ocean
In an effort to improve financial inclusion and the quality of financial services in remote Pacific Island countries, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is highlighting the potential of digital money, both private and central bank-issued.
On March 25, the IMF released a report examining the role that stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could play in developing the economies of Pacific Island countries.

While CBDCs may be better suited to countries with established currencies and mature banking systems, the IMF views that private stablecoins could also make a significant contribution to less developed economies.
In the report, the IMF emphasizes the importance of developing more efficient payment systems, expanding financial inclusion, and reducing dependence on correspondent banking relationships.

Although the report's focus is primarily on CBDCs, the IMF also recognizes the potential of private stablecoins backed by foreign currencies.
However, the IMF highlighted that smaller Pacific Island countries (PICs) may not have sufficient supervisory capacity to issue their own sovereign stablecoins.
While no PIC country has yet officially adopted private cryptocurrencies or stablecoins, some, such as Fiji, Palau, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, are exploring the concept of a CBDC.
The IMF remains the main supporter for CBDC implementation . In November 2023, IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, reinforced the urgency of CBDC implementation, believing that CBDCs could be a safe and low-cost alternative, even replacing cash.
