What is Pilotfish?

Pilotfish is an auto-scaling technology designed to increase the throughput (ability to process transactions) of the Sui network. Instead of relying on a single machine with high computing power, Pilotfish allows a single validator to use multiple machines simultaneously.  

A simple analogy is like breaking up work into larger teams - the more machines used, the faster the work gets done.

How Pilotfish Works?

Currently, validators on a blockchain network typically run their software on a single machine. This machine is responsible for validating transactions, adding new blocks to the blockchain, and securing the network. However, limited resources on a single machine can hinder the ability to process transactions.

Pilotfish solves this problem by allowing validators to harness the power of multiple machines. With Pilotfish, validators can distribute the workload among multiple servers, significantly increasing transaction processing capabilities.  

This ultimately leads to a more efficient network and better scalability.

Pilotfish Is Still In Its Early Stages

While Pilotfish's launch is promising, it's worth noting that the technology is still in the proof of concept (POC) stage. This means Pilotfish currently serves as a demonstration to prove the feasibility of the concept.

Mysten Labs plans to develop Pilotfish further by adding support for several important features. These features include:

• Support for various software: Pilotfish may currently only work with certain validation software. Support for various software will increase the compatibility and adoption of this technology.
• Sharding Replication: Sharding is a technique that breaks blockchain data into smaller pieces. Sharding replication ensures each validator has the latest copy of all data chunks. Pilotfish integrated with sharding replication will enable more efficient data distribution between validator servers.
• Fault Recovery: Hardware or software failures can disrupt validator operations. Pilotfish with error recovery capabilities can automatically resolve such failures and ensure the network continues to run smoothly.
• Ultra-Fast Remote Memory Access Network: Pilotfish may currently rely on standard networks for communication between servers. However, standard networks may not be fast enough to handle high data volumes. Integration with ultra-fast remote memory access networks can significantly increase the communication speed between validator servers.
