Bittime - The price of the cryptocurrency XRP is on the rise even though Bitcoin has just fallen more than 10%. The increase in XRP is in line with the upward trend of other alternative coins (altcoins) in the crypto market.
Interesting news comes from the movement of XRP whales (large investors). According to the Whale Alert report , yesterday (March 17) a whale sold 24.85 million XRP (around IDR 236 billion) to Bitstamp, a crypto exchange based in Luxembourg.
Interestingly, the price of XRP actually rose to touch $0.62 (around Rp. 9,400) today. This price increase has many people wondering about the impact of such large sell transactions on the price of XRP.

A Little History of XRP
XRP is a cryptocurrency that was born from a financial technology (fintech) company called Ripple. The company focuses on creating easier, faster and safer global payment solutions through money transfer, payment settlement and currency exchange systems.
XRP's journey began long before Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency today, appeared on the scene. Ripplepay, the forerunner of Ripple, was founded by software developer Ryan Fugger in 2004.
In 2012, Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb joined forces and co-founded Ripple. Their vision is the same as Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, namely building a global transaction system that is easier, faster and safer.

However, unlike Bitcoin which relies on decentralized blockchain technology, Ripplepay at that time used a centralized system.
Aware of Bitcoin's limitations, in 2011, McCaleb together with David Schwartz and Arthur Britto began developing the XRP Ledger. This is the core technology on which XRP functions.
The launch of the XRP Ledger in 2012 marked the birth of the native XRP token used in the Ripple ecosystem. Shortly after, Chris Larsen joined the development team and now serves as executive chairman and co-founder of Ripple.
It should be noted that the name Ripple itself underwent several changes between 2012 and 2015. Initially, the company was called Newcoin, then changed to OpenCoin in 2012.
A year later, they decided to use the name Ripple Labs. Only in 2015, this company officially changed its name to Ripple, the name by which it is known today.
