Starknet Bikini Initiative to Save Costs Along with Dencun Upgrade

Amid news of Ethereum's plans to upgrade Dencun, Layer-2 scalability protocol, Starknet, announced its mission to take advantage of the recently launched Ethereum upgrade, known as Dencun. This upgrade, which took place on March 13, is expected to significantly reduce transaction costs, especially for rollups users.

The Starknet Foundation has taken a proactive step by introducing a series of cost-saving initiatives that will go hand in hand with the Dencun upgrade. This upgrade represents the most important change in the Ethereum protocol since the transition to proof-of-stake consensus in October 2022.

Dencun Upgrade Makes Transaction Costs More Efficient

One of the key components of this upgrade is the Ethereum improvement proposal (EIP-4844), which modifies the way data is stored by Ethereum rollups on the mainnet. Layer-2 rollups, which process off-chain transactions and then submit summarized proofs of transaction to the Ethereum blockchain, will benefit from a new, more cost-effective method of adding data to blocks.

Although ecosystem developers anticipate delays in the realization of cost reductions by layer-2, the Starknet Foundation has prepared with a hard fork upgrade tailored to go hand in hand with Dencun. Starknet version 0.13.1 will abandon the expensive method of calling data and switch to a more efficient 'blob' type of transaction, hoping to drastically reduce costs.

With this move, Starknet hopes to reduce nearly 90% of gas fees paid for posting transactions to the Ethereum mainnet. This is good news for the crypto community, which is constantly looking for ways to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
