Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Prototype Could Become a Reality as Early as 2025

Bittime - Ben Goertzel, founder of SingularityNET, believes that an initial framework for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could be operational as early as next year. AGI is a theoretical concept that, if realized, would develop AI systems capable of performing any intellectual task that humans can perform.

Goertzel presented an AGI development plan that aims to ensure AGI is not controlled by companies or governments and will help humanity rather than harm it. 

The plan includes the use of open source code, decentralized infrastructure and governance, open cognitive architecture, diverse AGI algorithms, ethically sourced and managed data, and involving people from all over the world.

Goertzel said the plan is the foundation of everything “we do across the SingularityNET ecosystem.” SingularityNET is a decentralized network designed to connect machine learning models, not computers or servers. 

“We are building a decentralized AI infrastructure that is agnostic to any AI approach you might want,” he said, noting the goal is for “a 12-year-old genius from Tajikistan” to contribute to breakthroughs.

What is AGI?

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a level of artificial intelligence that includes artificial systems or entities that have the ability to understand, learn, apply knowledge, and adapt to various tasks or contexts in a manner similar to human intelligence. AGI is a central goal of some artificial intelligence research and a common topic in science fiction and futurology.

Currently, there are no real examples of AGI in the world, although there are several projects and ventures trying to achieve it, such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Neuralink. Some of the challenges faced in developing AGI include: lack of sufficient data and computing, difficulties in defining and measuring intelligence, ethical and security issues, and the potential social and economic impacts of AGI.

Hyperon OpenCog Project As Strongest Candidate

Although the network is designed to encourage collaboration and differentiated contributions to achieving AGI, Goertzel said his “best guess” is that his own OpenCog Hyperon project “might be the system that makes the breakthrough.” OpenCog is an open source AI project founded by Goertzel in 2008 and affiliated with SingularityNET.

Hyperon, which is scheduled to be released in Alpha in April, is described in a multi-authored research paper as “a framework for AGI at the human level and beyond” that combines the latest ideas, software and techniques. 

Goertzel explained that Hyperon Alpha will be a kind of proto-AGI using a special programming language called Metta that will be open in April so that open source developers can use it to write better code for different AI applications.

Goertzel clarified that they will have “a complete toolkit to build baby AGI” and said that they need to, and will, scale the system massively between now and the end of the year.

“To get to what I like to call baby AGI, we would need to speed things up a million times.”

“I think as early as 2025 we may have an AGI baby,” he said.

Goertzel Supports Vitalik Buterin's AGI Superintelligence Approach

Goertzel also supports Vitalik Buterin's defensive acceleration (d/acc) approach to developing superintelligent AI. Opinions on AGI development are currently divided between accelerationists (e/acc) who want to rush towards the technology because of its benefits, and decelerationists (decel), who want to slow development for fear of existential risks.

Buterin proposed the d/acc approach, which is a mix of the two, meaning developing superintelligent AGI as quickly as possible, but in a safe and responsible way. Goertzel agreed with this approach and said that “we must move as quickly as possible, but in a very careful and ethical way.”
