Terraform's Previous CFO Sent Back to South Korea

Bittime  - Terraform's former Chief Financial Officer, Han Chang-joon, has been extradited from Montenegro to South Korea, according to the announcement made by the Montenegrin government on Monday, as conveyed via a translated press release.

The decision to extradite Han Chang-joon was implemented by the Ministry of Justice in Montenegro, which transferred him to the jurisdiction of his home country.

Legal Process and Arrest

Han Chang-joon, along with former Terraform CEO Do Kwon, faced legal trouble in March the previous year when they were arrested in Montenegro for trying to travel with fake documents, as reported by Montenegrin officials. 

After being arrested, both were sentenced to four months in prison. Subsequently, they were detained in Montenegro pending a decision regarding their legal status and potential extradition request.

Extradition Requests and Legal Challenges

Although Han Chang-joon has been extradited, Do Kwon's fate remains undecided, with both South Korea and the United States attempting to regain his presence. 

Do Kwon faces charges in both jurisdictions stemming from the collapse of TerraUSD in 2022, an event that caused significant financial losses in the cryptocurrency market and triggered a series of bankruptcies.

Terraform Labs, the company involved in the controversy, has filed for bankruptcy and is embroiled in legal disputes with regulatory bodies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The press release indicated that South Korea intends to continue criminal proceedings against Do Kwon for various offenses related to fraud in financial investment services, investment and capital markets, with a potential sentence of life imprisonment as a consequence. 

However, despite the seriousness of the allegations, a final decision regarding Do Kwon's extradition has yet to be taken.

Although previous indications pointed to the possibility of extradition to the United States, requests from the United States and South Korea to further discuss Do Kwon's case have prompted Montenegro to postpone a final decision.
