Optimism is one such platform that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications on top of the Bitcoin network. Optimism uses a technology called rollup, which moves most of the computing and storage from Bitcoin's main chain to faster and cheaper side chains.
However, Optimism experienced several problems on February 15, 2024, which disrupted its network operations.
At 6:00 ET, the Optimism team began investigating reports of an “unsafe head stall,” meaning the sequencer, which is the entity responsible for generating new blocks in the side chain, stopped working.
Ten minutes later, developers found the cause of the problem and implemented a fix that briefly restored network functionality. However, these improvements did not last long; at 6:26 ET, reports of another instability raised doubts about the effectiveness of the fix, according to the network's status page.
Optimism's sequencer is still centralized, which means OP Labs, the company behind Optimism, must identify and resolve issues.
After finding the suspected root cause, the network was back online around 8:00 ET when the status page noted that the incident was not related to the planned Mainnet OP withdrawal delay, namely scheduled maintenance that started at 9:01 ET and ended one hour later.
Blockworks has contacted Optimism for more details. Arbitrum, the largest Ethereum rollup by total value locked (TVL), experienced a similar outage in December 2023.
While the team stated that no action was required from users or node operators after the resolution, community members on Discord disputed this.
“I can also confirm that a full node restart of op-node and op-geth is required to exit the deadlock,” wrote one member hazim-j.eth, co-founder of Stackup, who works on the account abstraction tool.
“If the status page had suggested a restart, we might have been able to get back online sooner,” he said.
During the disruption, node operators observed a single block reorganization – or reorg – of the insecure chain. Single block reorgs, which are not uncommon in blockchain operations, occur when the chain forks into two paths due to differences in block validation and then converges back on one agreed path.
In Optimism's case, an insecure head reorg refers to blocks generated by the sequencer, but not yet posted in batches to the Bitcoin main chain, according to an anonymous developer support engineer at OP Labs known as Soyboy Vegan.
According to Optimism documentation, “it is still possible for (unsecured transactions) to be excluded from the final blockchain if the Sequencer fails to publish the block to Bitcoin in a timely manner.”
