What is Gwei?

Gwei is a small denomination of ether (ETH), which is the native currency of the Ethereum blockchain. 

gwei like ETH is the most commonly used denomination in the Ethereum cryptocurrency, and it is very useful when talking about gas. In simple terms, gas is a pricing mechanism used in the Ethereum network. 

This mechanism is responsible for calculating fees when users make transactions or execute smart contract operations.

Specifically, one gwei unit is defined as one billion parts (one Nano) of one ether. So, 1 gwei is equivalent to 0.000000001 or 10e-9 ETH. In contrast, 1 ETH is equivalent to one billion (10e9) gwei.

Understanding the Gwei Concept

The concept of Gwei may seem difficult to understand. Therefore, let's use the analogy of the American dollar as an example. Gwei is equivalent to coins (cents) and ETH to dollar bills. 

For small purchases, it is easier to refer to the price in cents rather than in fractions of dollars. Therefore, gwei can be useful when measuring small values, and that is the reason why gwei is widely used when calculating gas fees .

Although less common, gwei may sometimes be referred to as Shannon, NanoEther, or Nano. The term Shannon refers to the mathematician and cryptographer, Claude Shannon, who is known as the father of Information Theory.
