Bittime – Curve Finance, a leading decentralized finance (DeFi) platform, has just faced an alarming liquidation crisis. The cause is the debt of the founder, Michael Egorov, amounting to $ 10 million which came from soft liquidation after the hacking attempt on June 13.
Large Debt and Soft Liquidation
Via social media, Egorov explained that his crypto asset holdings were too large for the market to be able to handle them. This resulted in $10 million in bad debt. He then claimed to have paid off 93% of the debt.
Egorov's large debt, which consists mostly of stablecoins, and the $60 million annual costs to maintain his position, put him at risk of a $140 million total liquidation when a spike in borrowing costs occurred due to the hack attempt.
This soft liquidation process caused Egorov's holdings to be partially liquidated.

Adverse Impact on CRV Token Prices
This crisis hurt the price of Curve Finance's native token, CRV, which plummeted by 28%. To stabilize the price, Egorov proposed burning 10% of $37 million worth of CRV tokens and offering a higher APY (Annual Percentage Yield) to attract voter support.
These events have reignited long-standing concerns about the risks Egorov's debt position poses to Curve Finance's stability. Research by Delphi Digital in 2023 has highlighted this potential danger.
According to the research, Egorov has up to $100 million in debt across various DeFi protocols, which, in the event of a large-scale liquidation, could trigger the collapse of the entire DeFi ecosystem.
Lessons from the Curve Finance Liquidation Crisis
The soft liquidation process works by reducing the "health" of the assets used as collateral for the loan. If the asset's health reaches 0%, the system will automatically terminate the loan and carry out a hard liquidation of the asset.
Curve Finance's liquidation crisis highlights several important lessons for the future of DeFi platforms:
1. Decentralization and Centralized Risk
DeFi is built on the principle of decentralization, but this incident shows how a large centralized position (in this case, Egorov's debt) can disrupt the stability of the entire platform.
In the future, DeFi developers will need to think about mechanisms to mitigate these centralized risks.
2. Transparency and Communication
Egorov's response to the crisis was swift and transparent. However, some argue that greater transparency regarding founders' debt positions early on could help prevent panic and drastic drops in CRV prices.
3. Effective Governance
An effective governance structure can help prevent risks posed by individual decisions.
Curve Finance may need to consider strengthening its governance mechanisms so that stakeholders can have greater control over decisions regarding the platform's finances.
4. Risk diversification
DeFi users also need to understand the importance of diversifying their assets. It is not recommended to be too concentrated on one particular DeFi platform or asset.
By diversifying, users can reduce the risk of significant financial loss in the event of a liquidation event.

Conclusion
Although the $10 million debt has been repaid, this liquidation crisis is an important reminder of the importance of good financial risk management, especially for DeFi platforms and their users.
Curve Finance's liquidation crisis was a valuable experience for the DeFi industry. By implementing stronger decentralization principles, increasing transparency, and developing effective governance, DeFi platforms can become more stable and resilient to future shocks.
DeFi users must also be wise in investing and diversifying their assets to minimize risk.
